Key Considerations for Purchasing Recycled Fabric

Always check for internationally recognized recycled content certifications, such as GRS (Global Recycled Standard) or RCS. These certificates clearly state the percentage of recycled material (e.g., 50%, 100%). This is the most reliable way to verify a recycled fabric. Branded materials like ECONYL® and Repreve® also offer their own traceability systems for their recycled fabric.

  • Key Considerations for Purchasing Recycled Fabric

1.Certification is Crucial:

Always check for internationally recognized recycled content certifications, such as GRS (Global Recycled Standard) or RCS. These certificates clearly state the percentage of recycled material (e.g., 50%, 100%). This is the most reliable way to verify a recycled fabric. Branded materials like ECONYL® and Repreve® also offer their own traceability systems for their recycled fabric.

2."Recycled" Does Not Mean "Biodegradable":

Recycled nylon and polyester are still synthetic fibers and do not readily biodegrade in the environment. The primary value of choosing this recycled fabric lies in diverting waste and reducing virgin resource consumption. At its end-of-life, the recycled fabric still requires proper handling through recycling systems.

3.Pay Attention to Fabric Finishes:

Many functional properties (e.g., water resistance, stain repellency, moisture wicking) come from chemical after-treatments. Inquire whether eco-friendly DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finishes (e.g., PFC-free formulations) were used. This ensures the overall sustainability of the final recycled fabric product.

4.Blends Are a Common and Excellent Choice:

Recycled Nylon/Recycled Polyester Blends: Balance cost and performance in the final recycled fabric.

Blends of Recycled Synthetic Fibers with Natural/Regenerated Cellulose Fibers (e.g., recycled cotton, Lyocell): Significantly improve moisture absorption, breathability, and hand feel. This type of recycled fabric blend is ideal for everyday wear.

5.Ask Your Supplier Key Questions:

"What is the percentage of recycled material in this recycled fabric?"

"Does this recycled fabric have certification (e.g., GRS)?"

"What is the source of the recycled material? (e.g., plastic bottles or fishing nets?)"

"Has this recycled fabric undergone any eco-friendly after-treatment?"

Summary

For high performance, abrasion resistance, elasticity, and premium feel with a generous budget -> Choose a recycled fabric with high recycled nylon content (e.g., ECONYL®).

For cost-effectiveness, everyday durability, crispness, easy care, and broad sustainable product adoption -> Choose a recycled fabric made from recycled polyester.

Regardless of your choice, treat third-party certification (e.g., GRS) as a minimum requirement when procuring any recycled fabric to ensure the authenticity of its environmental claims.
