Waterproof fabric is primarily categorized by its finishing technology and base construction.
The most common method to create waterproof fabric is through specialized finishing treatments.

Coated Waterproof Fabric: A continuous polymer film (e.g., PU, PVC) is applied. This type of waterproof fabric offers strong water resistance at a lower cost but often has poor breathability and a stiffer hand feel.
Laminated (Membrane) Waterproof Fabric: A microporous membrane (e.g., ePTFE) is bonded to the fabric interior. This high-performance waterproof fabric provides an optimal balance of waterproofness and breathability, making it ideal for outdoor apparel.
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) Finish: A surface treatment causing water to bead up. While not making waterproof fabric by itself, DWR is crucial for maintaining the dryness and breathability of other waterproof fabric types.
Waterproof fabric can also derive properties from its physical structure.
High-Density Fabric: Tightly woven from microfibers to physically block water. This base material is often used to produce a durable waterproof fabric after treatment.For instance, fabrics like the soft and fine peach skin/taslan, as well as commonly used coating base fabrics such as (chunya )Pongee and taffeta. These fabrics have a relatively soft hand feel and offer good wind resistance, but their breathability depends on subsequent treatments.
Treated Natural Fabrics: Like waxed cotton canvas, which becomes a classic waterproof fabric for bags and gear.
Selecting the right waterproof fabric depends on the specific needs for protection, comfort, and durability.
