Waterproof Fabric: Common Types and How to Choose
Dec 31,2025
Several common waterproof fabric types serve distinct purposes. Nylon Taffeta is lightweight and smooth, ideal for umbrellas and lightweight jackets. Its cost-effective counterpart, Polyester Taffeta, is a widely used waterproof fabric. For heavy-duty use, Oxford cloth is a rugged waterproof fabric for backpacks and tents. Pongee is a soft, dense waterproof fabric often used in rain jackets. Cordura nylon represents an extremely durable brand of waterproof fabric for demanding gear. Ventile cotton is a unique, tightly woven waterproof fabric that offers excellent breathability and wind resistance.

Choosing the right waterproof fabric depends on the need. For light daily rain, a PU-coated polyester taffeta or pongee waterproof fabric suffices. For outdoor activities, a laminated waterproof fabric with a membrane (e.g., Gore-Tex) is essential. For maximum durability in gear, a high-denier Oxford or Cordura waterproof fabric is best. For style and function, a treated cotton blend waterproof fabric works well.
Always check technical specifications: a higher hydrostatic head rating (e.g., 5000mm for jackets) indicates a more protective waterproof fabric.
